6 Tips for Screens & Summer Travel
Define success - Before you even leave your driveway, take some time to articulate your expectations for this trip. What are your #vacationgoals? Examples include: Relaxation, Celebration, Adventure, Time with family, a Digital Break.
Assess your inventory. What screens are coming with you and do you have a clear reason why? For example: Parent cell phones for basic communication and access to information. Tween Smartwatch for communication if we get separated. iPad or gaming console for entertainment when there is downtime or parents need to do something, Kindle to read.
Set expectations based on 1 & 2. For Example: This trip is all about having an adventure. We're going to be on the move & very active. Kids can use screens to wind down after an exciting day.
Explain the difference. How will this be different than a "normal" day? For example: Typically you are allowed up to 2 hours of screen time a day during the summer. On this vacation, our days are going to be different. Some days might be so busy we won't get to do screens. Other days we might be in the car for a long stretch and you might get extra time.
Prep your devices. Maybe school mode can be turned off Smartphones. Maybe daily time limits are disabled and managed manually. Maybe extra shows are downloaded. Maybe you curate a Spotify playlist or download some kid friendly podcasts
Health comes first. Remind your people that only if they are treating others with respect and kindness, being safe and getting enough sleep then screens can be part of your days. Those expectations must be met first and foremost.
